The sight of a full closet doesn't have to overwhelm you or hamper the excitement of an upcoming move. However, clothes may tear, soil, and rip during the relocation process if you don't pack them well. Compiled below are the best tips to pack and move clothes with ease.
Sort Your Wardrobe
Go through your wardrobe and pick out rarely worn items or clothing that doesn't fit you to determine what you want to keep.
If you have designer clothes or collectibles you want to get rid of, sell them on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or other online marketplaces. Then, throw out worn-out clothing and donate those in good condition. Also, set aside clothes for moving day and the first few days in your new home.
If you want to simplify the unpacking process, sort the clothes according to material, season, or purpose. Different clothing has different needs. For example, it isn't advisable to roll leather, suede, and wool as they wrinkle while nylon and synthetic materials stay wrinkle-free.
Leave Lightweight Items in the Dresser
Ask your mover if you can leave items in the dresser. If they allow you to do so, only leave unbreakable items like socks, t-shirts, underwear, and towels. However, the dresser should be sturdy and have locking mechanisms.
On moving day, the movers secure the drawers, wrap the dresser with moving blankets, and use tape to keep the blankets in place. If you're moving by yourself, you can take the drawers out, wrap them, and move them individually.
Use Wardrobe Boxes to Prevent Wrinkles
The best thing about wardrobe boxes is you can keep your clothes on hangers. The box comes with a metal hanging bar, and you can simply transport your clothing items from your wardrobe. Moreover, long items like jackets and dresses can stay wrinkle-free during the move.
It's advisable to get wardrobe boxes for valuable clothing like a wedding dress or tuxedo. You can also add towels, blankets, and even shoes at the bottom of the bag, but ensure you don't pack too much stuff. Another benefit of utilizing wardrobe boxes is that they don't require packing paper or bubble wrap.
Use Cardboard Boxes for Foldable Clothes
Cardboard boxes are great for folded clothing, as long as you secure them properly. These boxes are available in big box stores, liquor stores, and online stores. Once you have assembled sturdy boxes, fold your clothes inside out and into neat piles. Then, line the inside of the boxes with packing paper to protect clothes from water or any other damage.
Next, place the folded clothes in the boxes and add packing paper on top. Lastly, label the box accordingly to make it easy to unpack.
Pack Clothes in Suitcases
If you have several suitcases around your home, you're in luck because they can help you move. First, line the suitcase with raincoats or packing paper to protect your clothes. Then, place folded shorts and pants on the bottom, followed by dresses and shirts. Keep in mind that suitcases are ideal for items you can iron later, like t-shirts and shorts.
Use Vacuum Bags to Save Space
Vacuum sealed bags are a great option if you want to fit as much as possible into a few bags or have a small truck. You can fit your winter jackets, blankets, towels, or regular clothing in these bags. Squeeze the air out of the vacuum bag to keep your clothes free of moisture and odors. Moreover, you can leave the clothes in the bag for as long as you want.
