Tips for Packing and Unpacking During a Move

People approach moving with different perspectives. Packing your items and waiting for your moving company can be hard, and many individuals don't find moving fun. You might, however, find yourself unpacking energetically due to the excitement that comes with a new environment.

Almost everyone wants to make sure their move isn't hectic and is a smooth transition. Discover a few packing and unpacking tips to make your move less demanding.

When Packing

When packing, consider the following tips.

Pack Ahead of Time

Packing becomes tiring and less fun when you have a lot to do and limited time. Avoid waiting for the moving day to start packing. Start packing a week or two before the moving day. Early packing allows you to sort your items and declutter and gives you ample time to strategize your move. Pack the things you need less first, and work your way through until your move.

Label Boxes

Whether you use boxes or moving bins, ensure you have noted down what each box or bin contains and which room the box or bin is from. Labeling boxes makes unpacking easier since your movers can easily know where to take each box, reducing your work. You also have a way of finding each item by looking at the labeling.

Pack an Essentials Bag and Keep It Close

Set aside a bag and pack stuff like a toothbrush, clothes, phone, or laptop — anything you consider essential. In case the worst happens, you have everything you need beside you.

You can also include things crucial to you, such as medicine or documents. You can live a day or two with a bag stuffed with your most important items.

Load the Most Used Items Last

You will most likely be exhausted by the time you get to your new place. You may, therefore, not be able to unpack everything. When you pack the items you use most last, you can offload them first and unpack them. If you cannot complete unpacking everything on the same day, you will have already unpacked essential items that you may need and can continue unpacking the other items another day.

When Unpacking

After successfully moving to your new place, consider the following unpacking tips.

Unpack the Most Important Items First

Every household or individual has items that they consider essential and cannot survive without. Make sure you unpack what you consider essential first. Some good examples are your medication and personal electronics like your phone, laptop, and accessories.

Unpack Your Kitchen Items

Unpack your kitchen items right after unpacking the essentials. With a set kitchen, you can comfortably unpack other rooms at your own pace. Unpacking and setting up the kitchen allows you to store any perishable supplies. You also get a place to grab a snack to keep you going as you unpack other rooms.

Unpack Your Bedroom Items

Assemble your bedroom items and organize the room to your liking. While other rooms can wait, you need to lay down and rest. Unpacking your bedroom right after the kitchen ensures you have a place to relax and re-energize before you can keep on unpacking.

Organize Your Bathroom

One other important place you should prioritize is the bathroom. After a tiresome day, you need a place to freshen up. Hang your bathroom linen and everything else you need to hop in whenever you need to.
