4 Tips for Stress-Free Relocation With Pets

September 28, 2022

Finding a new job or a home in a different city presents an opportunity to start afresh. However, the stresses of relocating affect humans and pets. In particular, your furry or feathered friends take comfort in routines since disruptions can make them anxious.

Moving is perhaps the ultimate shake-up and can be highly stressful for pets. Therefore, ensure your pet is comfortable and safe before, during, and after the moving process. Fortunately, you can take measures to ensure your pet handles the temporary disruption well. Read on for practical tips.

1. Contact Your Vet

Typically, the first thing people do once they have decided to move is to hire a moving company. However, the step is just as important as contacting your pet's vet. The reason is that vets understand a lot about your furry friend's anxiety and the tactics to calm them down. Therefore, you can learn a lot about keeping your pet stress free during the relocation process.

A vet will also check whether your pet's vaccinations are up to date and help stock up on essential prescriptions to avoid emergency visits. Since you will move to a different city, chances are high that you will change vets. Therefore, your current veterinarian should furnish you with a copy of your pet's medical records. Lastly, a vet can recommend a new professional and trustworthy practitioner in the city or town you plan to relocate to.

2. Introduce a Crate Early

Most pet owners do not have a crate, and those who do rarely place their furry friends in them while at home. Therefore, pets get used to the unconfined space in the home or a car. However, the freedom can be problematic when moving because your pet will feel trapped in the confined contraption. While you can force them into a crate, be prepared to possibly deal with the stressful cries in your back seat.

An excellent strategy is introducing your pet to a pet carrier a few weeks before the moving day. Let them sniff the crate and spend some time in it to acclimate. Your pet will gradually get used to the pet carrier and see it as a familiar environment as the big day approaches. You can throw in their favorite toys and blanket to the carrier for a less intense experience.

3. Plan for Pet-Friendly Accommodations

Moving across states can be tiring, especially if you plan to drive. Therefore, adequate rest is advisable, so make arrangements for accommodations along your route. Sadly, many people do not bother to check if accommodation facilities have pet-friendly policies. If you ignore the step, your furry friend will have a long and stressful journey to your new home.

You should also not assume that an accommodation facility will accept your pet on their premises. You can find the right motel along your route by narrowing your search to facilities with pet-friendly policies. Remember, some accommodation facilities only accept certain pets; therefore, customize your search.

4. Keep Pets Away on the Big Day

The last thing you likely want is your pet darting around the house as movers pack and load your belongings in a truck. Typically, packing and lifting furniture and other household items creates a lot of noise, which stresses pets. Additionally, the chances of accidents and injuries to you, your pet, or a moving crew increase if your furry friend is part of the action.

You can move your pet to the quietest area until you are done packing and loading. However, the most appropriate move is to leave your furry friend with a friend or at a pet daycare for the day. As a result, you can rest assured that your pet gets the necessary attention rather than leaving them alone for hours. The main objective is to prevent exposure to stressful activities and ensure moving crew safety.

The extra plans and precautions involved when moving with pets can make the entire process stressful. However, ingenious tactics can make the experience stress-free for you and your pet and allow movers to take care of the rest. Contact us to help you — and your pet — relocate easily.
