4 Tips for a Successful Long-Distance Move

websitebuilder • March 31, 2022

Moving is a part of life, and sometimes that means moving to a different city within your state or across the country. A long-distance move can be exciting, but the move itself can be troublesome.

Whether you are making a temporary or permanent relocation, you'll face many challenges during the relocation process. The more you do to prepare for the move, however, the more successful it will be.

Below are some tips and tricks to making your long-distance move a smooth and efficient process.

1. Plan Ahead

Moving is stressful, and the long-distance aspect can make it even more difficult. You have many decisions to make when you move, and you can easily get overwhelmed.

To prevent any problems, begin planning your move as soon as you have the opportunity. Plan your tasks early and carry them out promptly. If possible, start planning your move at least two months in advance.

The first step of a moving plan is to organize all the pre-moving tasks before your move day arrives. The tasks include changing your address, canceling your utilities, and packing.

You can simplify this process by breaking the list down by priority and making the points as specific as possible. Check off each task as you complete it to avoid forgetting anything. A plan gives you plenty of time to prepare without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

2. Downsize

A long-distance move is a perfect time to purge your stuff. Even if you have a spacious new home, you should consider whether you really need to carry all your old stuff with you. Downsizing means less stuff to pack — it's also less stuff to move, unload, and store, which offers a great opportunity to cut down on moving expenses.

When you downsize, sort through all your possessions before you start to pack and decide what you want to bring. Also, think of the layout of your new home to get an idea of what items will fit into your new space.

Whatever you don't want to keep, give away to friends and family, or you can donate it and take a tax deduction. Alternatively, you can sell off more valuable items, which can help pay for moving costs.

If you find yourself unable to part with certain items, you should rent a storage unit until you figure out what you want to do.

3. Get In-Home Moving Estimates

Since you're moving over a long distance, you need to do everything once, including finding the right moving company. Request multiple in-home moving estimates from licensed and insured movers in your state.

An in-home moving estimate allows you to avoid hidden costs and surprises. During the assessment, a move representative from the local moving company will survey all the items you are moving. The moving agent notes all the items to give you an accurate price estimate.

4. Move During Off-Season

During peak season, demand for moving equipment and services is high. Moving companies often charge a premium because of fewer available trucks and resources.

Moving during the off-season can save you money, and it may be easier to get the date you want for your move. If off-season is not an option, moving on a weekday or in the middle of the month can also help save a few dollars.

Moving is both stressful and an adventure. If you get organized in advance, you'll avoid seen and unforeseen problems to keep things smooth and easy.
