What Should You Do on Moving Day?

Aug 22, 2022

Preparing for a relocation is challenging, and the moving day can get chaotic without proper planning. Many things can go wrong the day you move, but you can still enjoy a less stressful relocation experience. Check out the moving day checklist below to prepare for the adventure.

Wake Up Early

An early bedtime the night before your move ensures you get enough sleep and energy for the big day. Start packing months before moving day to reduce your workload on the days leading up to the relocation. A hearty breakfast, your favorite beverage, and a positive mood get you pumped for moving day activities.

Dress Suitably

Practical clothes and comfortable shoes help you move around and avoid injury. Movers discourage wearing loose clothing because it can snag on furniture, while tight shoes can cause blisters.

Your clothes should be breathable and flexible, and you should protect your feet with close-toed, comfy shoes. Additionally, check the weather forecast and choose appropriate clothing as you don't want to rummage through boxes in search of an outfit change.

Drop off Kids and Pets

In addition to being a distraction, running kids and pets risk injuries as movers will be moving heavy objects. Arrange for pet and child care for the moving day so you can focus on other tasks. If your children and pets stick around, move them out of the way and occupy them with toys and iPads.

Finish Packing

Before the movers arrive, pack the remaining items, such as bedding, bathroom items, and the dishes you used for breakfast. If you have hired movers to only load and unload moving trucks, everything should be packed up by the time they arrive.

You must also assemble an essentials box with things your family needs daily. Think of all the items that will keep your family going if the rest of your possessions get lost, such as medication, chargers, changes of clothes, snacks, valuable documents, basic tools, batteries, and hygiene items. This box should travel with you, so keep it away from other boxes to prevent movers from packing it in the truck.

Walk Around the House and Take Photos

A pre-loading walk-through is crucial because it ensures you don't leave anything behind. Scour storage areas, shelves, drawers, and closets and ensure all boxes are correctly labeled and sealed.

Then, check if all exits are clear to prevent accidents and help the movers progress smoothly. Taking photos of your furniture is also a great tip as it establishes their condition before movers load them onto moving trucks, so you can prove damage for insurance purposes.

Greet the Movers

Ensure there is enough space for movers to park the moving truck to reduce delays. If you reside in an apartment, you may reserve the elevator beforehand for quicker loading times. Next, greet the professionals and confirm the paperwork they provide, such as receipts, bill of lading, Order of Service, and home inventory list. Ensure that the documents reflect the agreed terms before you sign. Then, show the movers where the boxes and furniture are and give them the approval to start working.

Do a Final Clean Up

It is wise to deep clean your home weeks before your move so that you only need to sweep after the movers load your items. Keep a dustpan, broom, and wipes away from moving boxes to help you touch up the house. A last walk-through is recommended to ensure nothing important is left behind. Lastly, secure the home and proceed to your new residence.
